WHAT IS MUESLI?
So, what is Muesli? We're glad you asked! Muesli (pronounced “muse-lee”) is a simple mix of real ingredients, typically consisting of untoasted or lightly toasted grains, nuts, seeds and dried fruits. It was first introduced over 100 years ago by Swiss nutritionist Maximilian Bircher-Benner, who believed diet was essential to good health and used the cereal as part of his therapy. Our mueslis offer a modern twist on this century-old classic. Want to know the real secret behind muesli? Muesli is more about what it is NOT than what it IS. Find out why:
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MUESLI AND GRANOLA?
They have similar ingredients (grains, nuts, seeds and fruits), but how they’re made can be much different. Think of muesli as a less processed granola. Here’s why:
• Not baked. Our Bircher muesli is raw and all others are lightly toasted for roughly 10 minutes. This is just enough time to cure the honey while retaining the nutrition.
• No oils. There are enough good fats in our nuts and seeds by themselves, so you can save your oil intake for cooking dinner.
• Less sweet. Our Bircher muesli is completely unsweetened. All other flavors are lightly sweetened with organic honey. We never use refined sugars. Ever. Pinkie promise.
HOW DO YOU EAT IT?
Many people ask how to eat muesli. One of the best things about mueslis is the versatility. Eat it cold with milk or yogurt, eat it hot like oatmeal, or soak it to unleash the nutrition and flavors. You can even mix it into pancakes, cookies or muffins. Think of it as a clean slate. Go crazy, people, and share your ideas with us on social @sevensundaysmn!
WHATS WITH THE NAME?
We don’t know about you, but we like to take Sundays nice and easy. Slowing down to prepare a breakfast or brunch, read the newspaper, drink some good coffee and relax is how we unwind before the crazy week ahead. We’d love it if every day was more like a Sunday, but at least it can taste like it.
ARE YOU GLUTEN FREE?
Our Blueberry Chia Buckwheat and Vanilla Cherry Pecan mueslis are gluten free. The rest of our mueslis are wheat free, but not gluten free. In 2016, the entire muesli line will be gluten free.
ARE YOU ORGANIC?
We currently use organic honey, but because of the diversity of our recipes, it would not be economically feasible for us to use all organic ingredients at our current size. Rest assured, we are extremely careful when sourcing. Our ingredients are as close to their natural state as possible – no GMOs, no refined sugars and no preservatives. We like science, but prefer to keep it out of our kitchen.
ARE YOU NON-GMO?
YES - As of October 2015, our entire line of muesli is Non-GMO Project verified!
WHERE DO YOUR INGREDIENTS COME FROM?
Our motto is, “Keep it close to home when possible.” Many grains and seeds, for instance, are grown right here in the Midwestern US and Canada. Other ingredients like nuts and fruits are mostly from warmer states like California and Arizona. Our goal is to eventually travel and meet all of our suppliers face to face. And when we do, you will be the first to hear their stories!
WHERE IS IT MADE?
Unlike most muesli, which are imported, our muesli is made fresh in the good old US of A. Minnesota, to be exact. Up until our son was born in 2012, we were making it ourselves in a friend’s restaurant kitchen. From that point forward, we have been partnering with a local bakery to produce our muesli. We were worried that we would have to sacrifice quality as we scaled, but it has actually gotten better. These guys are pros, and they use the same techniques we used in our own kitchen. They just have the advantage of a lot bigger mixers, larger ovens and more hands.
